What is Kundli Matching? The Science of 36 Guna Milan
Kundli matching (also called Guna Milan or Horoscope Matching) is one of the most important applications of Vedic astrology in Indian culture. It evaluates the compatibility between two individuals based on the position of the Moon in their birth charts.
The 8 Kootas (Matching Criteria)
The system evaluates 8 different aspects of compatibility, each worth different points totaling 36:
1. Varna (1 point) — Spiritual Compatibility
Compares the spiritual development level of both individuals.
2. Vashya (2 points) — Mutual Attraction
Evaluates the natural dominance and attraction between the couple.
3. Tara (3 points) — Birth Star Compatibility
Compares the Nakshatras to assess health and well-being of the relationship.
4. Yoni (4 points) — Physical & Intimate Compatibility
Each Nakshatra has an animal symbol. Compatible animals score higher.
5. Graha Maitri (5 points) — Mental Compatibility
Compares the Moon sign lords to assess intellectual and emotional harmony.
6. Gana (6 points) — Temperament Match
Classifies individuals as Deva (divine), Manushya (human), or Rakshasa (demon).
7. Bhakoot (7 points) — Financial & Family Prosperity
Analyzes the Moon sign positions relative to each other.
8. Nadi (8 points) — Health & Genetic Compatibility
The most important koota. Same Nadi is considered inauspicious (Nadi Dosha).
