Jupiter usually spends about a year in a sign, so its sign change (Guru gochar) is one of the most watched events of the year. In 2026 and 2027 Jupiter moves quickly for a few months at a time, an "atichari" pace in tradition, so it enters Leo and returns to Cancer before settling.
Jupiter turns retrograde once a year for about four months. Tradition reads it as a time to deepen what is already growing: study, reflection, returning to a teacher or a long project. A vakri Jupiter is counted as strong in motion.
The shadow is the stretch of sky the planet covers three times: before turning retrograde it first passes the degree where it will later turn direct, and after turning direct it walks forward again to the degree where it turned retrograde.
