About Aja Ekadashi

Aja Ekadashi is the Ekadashi of Bhadrapada Krishna in the purnimanta calendar, and of Shravana Krishna in the amanta calendar. It comes in the late monsoon, a few days after Janmashtami, and is one of the Ekadashis of Chaturmas, when Vishnu is believed to be resting.

Its story, as Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, belongs to King Harishchandra of Ayodhya, known everywhere for keeping his word whatever it cost him. To honour a promise, Harishchandra gave away his kingdom, and in time was parted from his wife and son. He found work at a cremation ground, keeping watch and collecting the dues, and lived through long years of hardship without once giving up the truth. One day, sitting in sorrow, he met the sage Gautama, who told him of the Ekadashi of Bhadrapada Krishna. Harishchandra kept it as the sage advised, and the story says his trials came to an end: his family was restored to him and he returned to his kingdom.

Aja Ekadashi is therefore linked with patience, honesty and the hope that hard times pass. People going through a difficult stretch often keep it quietly, and many like to read or retell Harishchandra’s story during the day. Its second name, Annada, connects it with food and nourishment, and giving food to others is a natural part of the day.

The fast is kept in the familiar way. A light meal is taken on Dashami evening. On Ekadashi grains and rice are set aside; people keep a phalahar of fruit and milk, or nirjala by choice. Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi, flowers and a lamp, and the evening is spent in bhajan.
