About Padmini Ekadashi

The Hindu calendar follows the moon, and twelve lunar months fall about eleven days short of the solar year. To keep the festivals in their seasons, an extra month, called Adhik maas, is added roughly every three years. It is also known as Purushottam maas, the month of Vishnu, and is set aside for prayer, reading and giving rather than for weddings and other new undertakings. Padmini Ekadashi, also called Kamala Ekadashi, is the Ekadashi of its bright half.

The story, as Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, is about a king of Mahishmati and his queens. He had everything but a child, and after years of prayer he left for the forest to do penance, with his queen Padmini beside him. When their efforts brought no result, Padmini asked the wise Anasuya for guidance. Anasuya told her of the Ekadashi of the bright half of the extra month and how to keep it. Padmini kept it with full devotion, and the story says that in time she gave birth to a son, remembered as Kartavirya Arjuna, the king with a thousand arms.

Since the Adhik month is a whole month given to Vishnu, Padmini Ekadashi sits at its heart. Many people who do not usually fast choose to keep this one. Temples hold readings and kirtan through the month, and households often add a little extra giving, such as food, lamps or clothes, in the spirit of the season.

The fast is kept the usual way: a light meal on Dashami evening, no grains or rice on Ekadashi, fruit and milk or a nirjala fast by choice, Vishnu puja with tulsi and lotus or other flowers, and bhajan at night. It is broken the next morning on Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara, in the parana time shown above.
