About Papmochani Ekadashi

Papmochani Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of the waning moon in Chaitra, in the purnimanta calendar. Holi has just been played, and in about four or five days Chaitra Navratri and the Hindu new year will begin. Coming at this turning point, the day is kept less as a fast of asking and more as one of taking stock: what to carry forward, what to let go of, and what to set right.

The story, as Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, is about the young sage Medhavi, who was meditating in the lovely forest of Chaitraratha, and the apsara Manjughosha, who came to that forest. Drawn to each other, they spent many years together before Medhavi realised how far he had drifted from his practice. Upset, he spoke harshly to Manjughosha, and she, hurt, asked how things could be made right. He told her of the Ekadashi of the dark half of Chaitra. When he went home to his father, the sage Chyavana, his father gently told him to keep the same fast himself. Both kept it, and the story says both found their peace again.

What makes the story gentle is that no one is left out. The one who strayed and the one who was spoken to harshly are both given the same simple way forward. That is how many people approach this day: a few moments of honest reflection, an apology owed and given, a small habit put down, and the fast offered as a clean beginning before the new year.

The fast is kept the usual way: a light meal on Dashami evening, no grains or rice on Ekadashi, fruit and milk or a nirjala fast by choice, Vishnu puja with tulsi, and a calm evening of bhajan. It is broken the next morning on Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara, in the parana time shown above.
