About Parama Ekadashi

Parama Ekadashi falls in the dark half of Adhik maas, the extra lunar month that is added about every three years so the calendar stays in step with the seasons. With Padmini Ekadashi, it is one of only two Ekadashis that belong to this month, and like the rest of Purushottam maas it is kept in Vishnu's name, with a special place for giving.

The story, as Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, is about a Brahmin named Sumedha who lived with his wife Pavitra in the city of Kampilya. They were very poor, yet they never turned a guest away, and Pavitra would often go without food herself so that a visitor could eat. When Sumedha thought of going to another land to earn a living, Pavitra asked him to stay and trust that they would manage together. One day the sage Kaundinya came to their door. Moved by their kindness, he told them of Parama Ekadashi and how to keep it. They kept it faithfully, and the story says their home slowly grew full again.

The heart of the story is not the plenty that came later but the giving that came first. That is why many people mark Parama Ekadashi with a gift that fits their own means: a meal shared, grain or clothes given, a lamp lit in a temple. A small gift given gladly is held to be as dear as a large one.

The fast is kept the usual way: a light meal on Dashami evening, no grains or rice on Ekadashi, fruit and milk or a nirjala fast by choice, Vishnu puja with tulsi, and bhajan through the evening. Some keep a longer, five-day practice that begins on this day, usually in a gentle form with fruit and water. The fast is broken the next morning on Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara, in the parana time shown above.
