About Parivartini Ekadashi

Parivartini Ekadashi, the Ekadashi of Bhadrapada Shukla, goes by many names: Parsva Ekadashi, Padma Ekadashi, Vamana Ekadashi and, in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, Jaljhulni Ekadashi. Parivartan means turning and parsva means side. Vishnu, who lay down for his yogic sleep on Devshayani Ekadashi, is believed to turn from one side to the other on this day, which marks the middle of Chaturmas.

The day is also tied to Vamana, the dwarf form of Vishnu. The story, as Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, recalls King Bali, a generous asura king who had won the three worlds. Vamana came to him as a small brahmin boy and asked for just three steps of land. Bali, true to his word, agreed. Vamana then grew to a vast size, covered the earth and the sky in two steps, and Bali humbly offered his own head for the third. Moved by his devotion, Vishnu gave Bali a kingdom of his own below the earth and promised to stay close to him. For this reason Vamana is worshipped with special care on this Ekadashi.

In Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh the day is celebrated as Jaljhulni Ekadashi, also known in some places as Dol Gyaras. Images of Krishna, often called Thakurji, are carried out of temples in decorated palanquins, with drums, songs and dancing, to a nearby pond, river or lake. There the deity is gently bathed and swung on the water before being brought home again. Whole towns come out for these processions, which give the fast a bright, shared feeling.

The fast follows the familiar pattern: a light meal on Dashami evening, no grains or rice on Ekadashi, and a phalahar of fruit and milk, or nirjala by choice. Vishnu and Vamana are worshipped with tulsi, flowers and a lamp.
