About Saphala Ekadashi

Saphala Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of the waning moon in Paush by the purnimanta reckoning of North India (Margashirsha in the amanta calendar), in the heart of the North Indian winter. Its name means 'fruitful', or that which brings things to completion. It comes in the cold months, when a day of fasting asks a little more of the body, so it is often kept slowly and simply.

The story, as Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, is about Lumpaka, the eldest son of King Mahishmata of Champavati. Lumpaka wasted his days in bad company, and in the end his father sent him away from the city. He lived in the forest under an old peepal tree. On a bitter Dashami night he was too cold to eat or sleep. The next day, still weak, he gathered fruit but could not eat it, so he set it at the foot of the tree and offered it to Vishnu, and that night again the cold kept him awake. Without meaning to, he had kept the whole Ekadashi fast and vigil. The story says his heart changed from that day, he returned home, and in time he ruled kindly.

That is why fruit and lamps are at the centre of this day. People offer the best seasonal fruit they have, such as oranges, guavas, bananas, amla or pomegranates, and light lamps of ghee or sesame oil in the temple, at the tulsi plant and at the doorway. Many keep the lamps burning through the evening.

The fast is kept in the usual way: a light meal on Dashami evening, no grains or rice on Ekadashi, fruit and milk, or nirjala for those who choose it, Vishnu puja with tulsi, and bhajan into the night. It is broken the next morning on Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara, in the parana time shown above.
