About Sharad Purnima

Sharad Purnima is the full moon of Ashwin, five days after Dussehra, as the rains give way to clear autumn skies. It is believed that on this night the moon shines with all sixteen of its kalas, its measures of fullness, and that its light carries a special coolness and goodness. Families make kheer of rice and milk and leave it in the open under the moonlight, then share it as prasad late that night or the next morning.

The night is also called Kojagari or Kojagara Purnima. The name comes from the question 'ko jagarti?', meaning 'who is awake?'. It is believed that Lakshmi moves across the earth on this night asking who is awake, and so many people stay up, play games, sing and keep lamps lit. In Bengal and Assam, Kojagari Lakshmi Puja is held at night in homes, with alpana drawn on the floor, small footprints of Lakshmi leading inside, and offerings of rice, coconut sweets and fruit. In Odisha the day is also Kumar Purnima, named for Kumar Kartikeya, when unmarried girls fast, pray to the sun and the moon, and play traditional games. Gaja Lakshmi puja is also held in places. In Mithila, Kojagara is a family celebration with makhana and paan, especially for the newly married.

In Braj, this is the night of Krishna's Maharaas, when he is said to have danced with the gopis on the banks of the Yamuna in Vrindavan. Temples in Vrindavan and Mathura hold special darshan and kirtan under the full moon.

Many people keep a fast through the day and break it at night after offering water to the moon. Rooftops and terraces fill with families sitting out in the moonlight.

Sharad Purnima is kept on the day when the Purnima tithi is present at moonrise and through the night, and each region and family keeps it in its own way.
