About Shattila Ekadashi

Shattila Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of the waning moon in Magh by the purnimanta reckoning (Paush in the amanta calendar), the coldest stretch of the North Indian winter. Sesame is a warming seed, and Magh is the month of til: Makar Sankranti, with its til laddoos, falls close by (in some years on the very same day), and this Ekadashi carries the same seed into a day of fasting and worship.

The six uses that give the day its name are simple. Sesame is added to the bathing water; a paste of sesame is rubbed on the body before the bath; sesame is offered into a small fire with prayers; water mixed with sesame is offered to the sun and to the ancestors; a little sesame is eaten, usually as a sweet with jaggery, since til is not counted as grain; and sesame, often with jaggery, blankets or warm clothes, is given to those who need it.

The story, as Vishnu tells it to the sage Narada, is about a devout woman who fasted and prayed all her life but never gave away food. When Vishnu came to her door as a mendicant to test her, she placed only a lump of earth in his bowl. Later she found her heavenly home bare, with nothing in it but that lump of earth. Following advice she was given, she kept Shattila Ekadashi with gifts of sesame, and the story says her home filled. It is told gently, as a reminder that worship and giving belong together.

The fast itself follows the usual way: a light meal on Dashami evening, no grains or rice on Ekadashi, fruit, milk and sesame sweets, or nirjala for those who choose it, Vishnu puja with tulsi and til, and bhajan at night. It is broken the next morning, on Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara, in the parana time shown above.
