About Shravana Putrada Ekadashi

Putrada means the giver of children. There are two Putrada Ekadashis in the year: this one in Shravana Shukla, and another in Pausha Shukla. The Pausha Putrada Ekadashi is more widely kept in North India, while many other regions give the Shravana one more importance. Couples hoping for a child often keep it together, and parents keep it with their children’s health and happiness in mind.

The story, as Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, is about King Mahijit of Mahishmati, a kind and fair ruler who had no child. His sorrow was shared by his people, who loved him. His ministers and subjects went into the forest in search of guidance and met a wise sage named Lomasha. Seeing their care for their king, the sage advised them to keep the Ekadashi of Shravana Shukla together and to offer its merit to the king and queen. The whole kingdom kept the fast with devotion, and the story says the queen in time gave birth to a son.

The story is also remembered for how an entire kingdom fasted for someone else’s hope, and that shared, caring spirit is still part of the day. Relatives and friends sometimes keep the fast alongside a couple, as a quiet way of standing with them.

Its other name, Pavitropana, comes from the custom of offering a pavitra to Vishnu: a garland or loop of sacred thread, often of cotton or silk tied in many knots. In many temples and homes the pavitra is placed on the deity on this day or in the days around it, as a sign of renewing one’s bond of devotion for the year ahead.

A light meal is taken on Dashami evening, grains and rice are avoided on Ekadashi, and a phalahar of fruit and milk is kept, or nirjala by choice. The fast is broken the next morning on Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara has passed, within the parana time shown on this page.
