About Utpanna Ekadashi

Utpanna Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of the waning moon in Margashirsha, in the purnimanta calendar of North India. Most Ekadashis carry a story of what the fast once did for someone. This one is kept for the origin of the vow itself: the story says that Ekadashi is not only a date but a goddess, and that she appeared on this day.

The story, as Krishna tells it to Arjuna, begins with a demon named Mura who had driven the gods out of their heavens. Vishnu fought him for a long time and then withdrew to rest in a cave in Badrikashram. As Mura came into the cave to strike the sleeping Vishnu, a radiant young woman stepped out of Vishnu's own body and defeated him. When Vishnu woke, he was pleased. He named her Ekadashi because she was born on the eleventh day, and blessed her: those who keep her day with faith would be dear to him.

Because of this, Utpanna Ekadashi is the traditional starting point for anyone who wants to keep Ekadashi through the year. People who are new to the practice, or who are returning after a break, often make a small resolution here, before Vishnu, to keep the Ekadashis of the coming year in whatever form their health allows.

The fast is kept in the familiar way. A light, sattvic meal is taken on Dashami evening. On Ekadashi there are no grains or rice; fruit and milk are taken, or the day is kept nirjala by those who wish. Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi, incense and a lamp, and many also offer flowers to Ekadashi devi as a young goddess. The evening is spent in bhajan. The fast is broken the next morning, on Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara, within the parana time shown above.
