About Amalaki Ekadashi

Amalaki Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of the bright half of Phalgun, a few days before Holi. Amalaki is the amla, the Indian gooseberry, and on this day the tree itself is the centre of worship. Amla is believed to be dear to Vishnu, and in many homes and temples the tree is treated as his dwelling for the day.

Families go to an amla tree in the morning, often in a temple garden or a neighbour's courtyard. They water its roots, wind a raw cotton thread around the trunk, apply roli and rice, offer flowers, a lamp and incense, and walk around it. Where no tree is near, a small branch or a few amla fruits are worshipped at home instead. Amla is eaten as part of the fast and given away, and some people sit in the shade of the tree for a while in quiet prayer.

The story told for this day speaks of a hunter who came upon a town keeping the Amalaki vigil around an amla tree. Hungry and curious, he stayed through the night, listening to the songs and stories, without eating. The story says that this one night stayed with him, and he was born in a later life as a generous king. In Varanasi the day is Rangbhari Ekadashi, remembered as the day Shiva first brought Parvati to Kashi after their wedding. At Kashi Vishwanath and across the city's lanes, people play with gulal, beginning Holi a few days early.

The fast is kept the usual way: a light meal on Dashami evening, no grains or rice on Ekadashi, fruit (amla among it) and milk, or nirjala by choice, Vishnu puja with tulsi, and bhajan at night. It is broken the next morning on Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara, in the parana time shown above.
