About Bohag Bihu

Bohag Bihu begins at the turn of the Assamese months of Chot and Bohag, when the Sun enters Mesha. It is the most joyful of the three Bihus of Assam, coming as the fields are readied for a new season of sowing and the trees break into fresh leaf. Celebrations traditionally run for seven days, though most of the joy gathers in the first few.

The first day is Goru Bihu, the Bihu of cattle, on the last day of Chot. Cattle are taken to a river or pond, bathed with a paste of turmeric and black gram, gently touched with sprigs of dighloti and makhioti leaves, and fed pieces of gourd and brinjal while people sing for their good health. In the evening they are given new ropes. It is a day of gratitude to the animals that share the farmer's work.

The next day, the first of Bohag, is Manuh Bihu, the Bihu of people. Everyone bathes early, wears new clothes and bows to elders, offering them a gamosa, the white handwoven cloth with red borders that is a sign of respect in Assam. Elders bless the young, and friends exchange gamosas and visits.

Homes fill with pitha such as til pitha and ghila pitha, laru made of coconut or sesame, and jolpan of flattened rice, curd and jaggery. In villages and towns, young people dance Bihu to the dhol, pepa and gogona, and groups of husori singers go from house to house singing blessings for the household. Bihu stages host songs and dance for days.

Bohag Bihu follows the solar calendar, so it begins with the Sun's entry into Mesha. Customs differ between regions and communities of Assam, and each village keeps its own way of celebrating.
