About Kamada Ekadashi

Kamada Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of Chaitra Shukla, a few days after the new year begins with Chaitra Navratri. Coming so early in the year, it is often the first Vishnu fast a family keeps in the new cycle of twelve months, and many people treat it as a quiet, hopeful beginning. Kamada means the giver of what one longs for, and the day is kept by those with a heartfelt wish they carry into the year.

The story, as Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, is about a Gandharva couple, Lalit and Lalita, who lived in the court of a king named Pundarika. Lalit was a singer. One day, while he sang before the king, his thoughts drifted to Lalita and he lost the tune. The angry king took away his Gandharva form, and Lalit wandered the forests in a strange and frightening shape, with Lalita following him wherever he went. In time she reached the hermitage of a sage, who told her about the Ekadashi of Chaitra Shukla. She kept the fast with full devotion and offered its merit to her husband, and the story says Lalit was restored to his own form.

That is what gives Kamada Ekadashi its particular warmth. It is remembered as a fast kept by one person for another, out of love and loyalty. Many still keep it with a loved one, a family hope or a long held wish in mind.

The fast follows the familiar Ekadashi pattern. A light, simple meal is taken on the evening of Dashami. On Ekadashi grains and rice are set aside; many keep a phalahar of fruit and milk, while some keep it nirjala, without water, by choice. Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi leaves, flowers, a lamp and incense, and the evening often closes with bhajan and kirtan, sometimes through the night.
