About Varuthini Ekadashi

Varuthini Ekadashi is the Ekadashi of Vaishakha Krishna in the North Indian purnimanta calendar; in the amanta calendar used in the south and west, the same day is counted in Chaitra Krishna. The word varuthini suggests armour or shelter, and the fast is believed to wrap those who keep it in a sense of protection and calm. Vishnu is worshipped on this day as Vamana, the small, gentle brahmin boy who asked King Bali for only three steps of land.

The story, as Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, praises this Ekadashi through the kings who kept it, King Mandhata among them. Mandhata is remembered as a just and generous ruler, and the story says this fast brought him peace and lasting good. The same telling dwells at length on giving. It places the gift of food among the very highest of gifts, because food sustains every living being, and it speaks warmly of giving sesame, which is held dear to Vishnu.

So Varuthini has a generous, outward looking character. Many families cook simple food to share, give grain, sesame or water to those who need it, or feed cows and birds. In some homes people also keep small personal disciplines through the day: speaking gently, staying away from quarrels and living simply, so that the fast is kept in the mind as well as at the table.

The fast itself follows the familiar pattern. A light meal is taken on Dashami evening. On Ekadashi grains and rice are not eaten; most people keep a phalahar of fruit and milk, and some go without water by choice. Vamana, or Vishnu in any form the family worships, is offered tulsi, sesame, flowers and a lamp, and the evening is spent in bhajan.

The fast is broken the next morning on Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara is over, within the parana time shown on this page. Many like to give a little food to someone before they eat.
