About Akshaya Tritiya
Akshaya Tritiya falls on Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya, the third day of the bright half of Vaishakha, as the summer heat sets in. It is also called Akha Teej, especially in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. The day is counted among the few that are held good in themselves, so many families begin new ventures, enter new homes, start the sowing season or hold weddings on it without looking for a separate muhurat.
Many memories gather around this day. It is believed to mark the beginning of the Treta Yuga, and Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu, is remembered close to it. A well-loved story tells of Sudama, the poor friend of Krishna, who came to Dwarka with only a handful of beaten rice and found his small gift received with great love. In Puri, work on the chariots for the Rath Yatra begins on this day, and in Vrindavan the feet of Banke Bihari are shown to devotees only on Akshaya Tritiya.
The spirit of the day is giving. Because it falls in the hot season, people give what helps others through the summer: earthen pots of cool water, grain, sattu, fruit, hand fans, umbrellas and footwear. Many set up stalls of drinking water by the road, feed cows and birds, and offer food to those in need. Prayers are offered to Vishnu and Lakshmi, and some keep a fast.
Many families also mark the day by bringing home a small piece of gold or silver as a custom. It is a tradition, nothing more, and the day is just as complete with prayer and giving alone.
Akshaya Tritiya is kept on the day Tritiya is present in the forenoon, and the timing shown above follows that. Families choose what to begin and what to give in their own way.
