About Mohini Ekadashi

Mohini Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of Vaishakha Shukla, in the warm weeks of early summer. Its name comes from Mohini, the form Vishnu is said to have taken at the churning of the ocean. When the amrit, the nectar of immortality, finally rose from the waters, the devas and the asuras both reached for it. Vishnu appeared as Mohini, so graceful that everyone stopped to watch, and in that calm moment she shared the amrit out among the devas. It is remembered as a time when gentle wisdom settled a struggle that force could not.

The story told for this Ekadashi, as Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, is about a young man named Dhrishtabuddhi, the youngest son of a good and generous merchant in the city of Bhadravati. Dhrishtabuddhi spent his days in idle, careless ways, wasted his father’s wealth and was at last sent away from home. Alone and with nothing, he wandered until he reached the hermitage of a sage named Kaundinya. Tired and humbled, he asked the sage how he could set his life right. The sage told him to keep the fast of Vaishakha Shukla Ekadashi. He kept it with sincerity, and the story says his life turned toward peace and goodness from then on.

That is the heart of Mohini Ekadashi. It is remembered as a fresh start, a day for anyone who wishes to leave old habits behind and begin again with a steadier mind.

The fast is kept in the usual way: a simple meal on Dashami evening, no grains or rice on Ekadashi, and a phalahar of fruit and milk, or nirjala for those who choose it. Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi, flowers and a lamp, and many spend the evening singing bhajans or retelling the story of the churning of the ocean.

The fast is broken the next morning on Dwadashi, once Hari Vasara has passed, within the parana time shown on this page.
