About Buddha Purnima
Buddha Purnima, also called Vesak or Buddha Jayanti, falls on Vaishakha Purnima, the full moon of Vaishakha. In the Buddhist tradition this one full moon is linked with three moments in the life of the Buddha: his birth as Prince Siddhartha at Lumbini, his enlightenment under the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya, and his passing into mahaparinirvana at Kushinagar.
Siddhartha grew up in comfort, but the sight of age, illness and death moved him to leave the palace and search for the end of suffering. After years of seeking, he sat in meditation under a pipal tree at Bodh Gaya and attained enlightenment, becoming the Buddha, the awakened one. He gave his first teaching at Sarnath near Varanasi, and spent the rest of his life teaching a middle path of right understanding, kindness and mindful living.
On this day, Buddhists visit viharas and monasteries, offer flowers, candles and incense, listen to teachings and take the five precepts, with many keeping eight precepts for the day. The Mahabodhi temple at Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, Kushinagar and Lumbini draw pilgrims from across the world. Homes and viharas are lit with lamps, and many people make kheer, remembering the bowl of rice and milk offered to Siddhartha before his enlightenment.
Many Hindus also honour the day, and in some Hindu traditions the Buddha is counted among the avatars of Vishnu. People keep it simply: eating vegetarian food, giving food, clothes or water to those in need, caring for animals and birds, and spending some time in quiet reflection.
Buddha Purnima is kept on the full moon of Vaishakha, and the tithi shown above sets the day. In some countries the day is counted a little differently, so communities follow their own calendars.
