About Ganga Dussehra

The story is one of patience. King Bhagiratha spent years in penance so that the heavenly river Ganga would come down to earth and bring peace to the souls of his ancestors, the sons of King Sagara. The river's force was so great that Shiva received her in his matted hair and let her flow out gently in streams. She then followed Bhagiratha across the plains to the sea, which is why she is also called Bhagirathi. Ganga Dussehra remembers this descent, the Ganga avataran.

The name is understood as das and hara, ten and taking away, and the day is believed to wash away ten kinds of wrongdoing of body, speech and mind. The number ten runs through the customs: ten dips, ten lamps, ten kinds of fruit or flowers, and gifts given in tens. Because the day falls in the hottest part of summer, many people give water pots, hand fans, umbrellas, sattu and cool drinks, and some set up water stalls for passers-by.

The largest gatherings are at Haridwar's Har Ki Pauri, Rishikesh, Varanasi, Prayagraj and Garhmukteshwar, where people bathe at dawn and the evening Ganga aarti fills the ghats with light. Small lamps in leaf cups are floated on the water. In some places the celebrations run for ten days, ending on Dashami. Those who live far from the river add a few drops of Gangajal to their bath water at home and offer prayers there.

The day is kept on Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami, and the tithi as it falls in your city decides the date. In some years, when Jyeshtha comes twice as an Adhik month, Ganga Dussehra is kept in the Adhik Jyeshtha. In most years Nirjala Ekadashi follows a day or two later, so many families plan the two days together.
