About Vat Purnima Vrat
Vat Purnima carries the same story as the Vat Savitri Vrat of the North. Savitri married Satyavan knowing his life would be short. When the day came and Yama took his life, she walked after Yama, speaking with such faith and good sense that he granted her wishes and at last gave Satyavan back to her. For generations, women have kept this day as a prayer for their husband's long life and a happy married life.
It is kept on Jyeshtha Purnima, the full moon of Jyeshtha, in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and Karnataka. This is fifteen days after the North keeps Vat Savitri on Jyeshtha Amavasya. The gap comes from the custom each region has followed for generations, not from any difference in the vrat itself. The meaning, the story and the tree are shared.
On the morning of the day, women dress in traditional sarees, wear their mangalsutra, green bangles and kumkum, and walk with a puja thali to a banyan tree in a temple courtyard or the neighbourhood. The thali carries haldi, kumkum, flowers, rice, fruit, sweets and a spool of white cotton thread. After offering water and flowers at the roots, women walk around the trunk, winding the thread as they go, often seven times. They then apply haldi and kumkum to one another and share fruit and small gifts, so the morning becomes a gathering of friends and neighbours as much as a puja. The story of Savitri is told while everyone sits together in the shade.
Many women fast through the day, some taking only fruit or milk, and in some homes the vrat is kept for three days starting from Trayodashi. Where no banyan is close by, some women do the puja at home with a picture of the tree. The day is set by the Purnima tithi as it falls in your city, which is why the date shown above is the one to follow.
