About Yogini Ekadashi

Yogini Ekadashi is the Ekadashi of Ashadha Krishna in the purnimanta calendar; in the amanta calendar it falls in Jyeshtha Krishna. It is the last Ekadashi before Devshayani Ekadashi, when Vishnu is believed to enter his four months of yogic sleep, so it comes at the close of one season and the edge of another.

The story, as Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, is set in Alaka, the city of Kubera, the lord of wealth. Kubera was a devoted worshipper of Shiva, and every morning his gardener Hemamali brought fresh flowers from the Manasarovar lake for the puja. One day Hemamali stayed at home with his wife Vishalakshi and forgot the flowers, and the puja was kept waiting. Kubera, displeased, sent him away from Alaka, and Hemamali fell ill with a painful skin disease. He wandered through the mountains until he came to the hermitage of the sage Markandeya. The sage listened to him with kindness and told him to keep the fast of Ashadha Krishna Ekadashi. Hemamali kept it faithfully, and the story says he was healed and returned home.

Yogini Ekadashi is therefore linked in people’s minds with healing and with second chances after a lapse. It is kept with humility, as a way of setting right small neglects and returning to one’s daily duties with fresh care. Many people pray on this day for the health of someone in the family.

The fast is kept in the familiar way. A light meal is taken on Dashami evening. On Ekadashi grains and rice are avoided; people keep a phalahar of fruit and milk, or go without water by choice. Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi, flowers and a lamp, often with a peepal tree also honoured with water, and the evening is spent in bhajan.
