About Devshayani Ekadashi

Devshayani Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of Ashadha Shukla, as the monsoon settles in. The name means the Ekadashi on which the god lies down. It is believed that Vishnu goes into yoga nidra, a restful yogic sleep, on the coils of the serpent Shesha in the ocean of milk, and wakes four months later on Prabodhini Ekadashi in Kartika.

These four months are called Chaturmas. By long custom, weddings, house warmings and other large ceremonies are paused during this time and resume after Vishnu wakes. Many people take up a personal discipline for Chaturmas, such as giving up a particular food, eating once a day, reading scripture daily or spending more time in prayer. Monks and wandering sadhus traditionally stay in one place through the rains.

In Maharashtra this day is Ashadhi Ekadashi, the high point of the Pandharpur Wari. For weeks before it, lakhs of warkaris walk to Pandharpur in great processions, singing abhangs and carrying the palkhis of their saints, to reach the temple of Vitthal, Krishna standing on a brick, by Ekadashi. The day is also remembered through the story of King Mandhata, whose kingdom suffered a long drought until, on a sage’s advice, he and his people kept this fast and the rains returned.

The fast follows the familiar pattern. A light meal is taken on Dashami evening. On Ekadashi grains and rice are set aside; most keep a phalahar of fruit and milk, some keep it nirjala by choice. Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi, yellow flowers and a lamp, and in many homes his image is laid to rest on a small bed for the four months ahead. The evening is spent in bhajan.
