About Hariyali Teej
The story behind Teej is one of devotion. Parvati is said to have longed for Shiva through many lifetimes and to have kept a long, hard penance until he accepted her as his wife. Hariyali Teej celebrates their reunion. Married women keep the day for a happy and lasting marriage, and many unmarried girls keep it hoping for a loving husband. Parvati is worshipped on this day as Teej Mata.
It falls on Shravana Shukla Tritiya, when the rains have turned the land green, which is where the name hariyali, greenery, comes from. It is also called Shravani Teej. The festival is loved across Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana. In Jaipur a procession of Teej Mata moves through the old city, and in Haryana swings go up in villages and towns. Hariyali Teej is the first of the three Teejs of the rainy season, followed by Kajari Teej and Hartalika Teej.
Green is everywhere: green sarees and lehariya, green glass bangles, and hands decorated with mehndi the night before. Swings are tied to the branches of trees or set up in courtyards, and women swing in turn while singing Sawan songs. A favourite custom is the sindhara, gifts sent by a married woman's parents: clothes, bangles, mehndi, sweets and ghevar. In many families a new bride spends her first Teej at her parents' home.
Many women fast through the day, some without water, and in the evening worship clay images of Shiva and Parvati and listen to the Teej katha together. The fast is then opened with the family. The day follows the Tritiya tithi, and how strictly the fast is kept is a matter for each family and each woman to decide for herself, and those who are pregnant, unwell, older or on medicines often keep it with water and fruit.
