About Kamika Ekadashi

Kamika Ekadashi is the Ekadashi of Shravana Krishna in the purnimanta calendar; in the amanta calendar it is counted in Ashadha Krishna. It comes soon after Devshayani Ekadashi, in the first rains of Chaturmas, and is the first Ekadashi kept while Vishnu is believed to be in his yogic sleep. Shravana is also the month of Shiva, so homes are full of worship through these weeks, and Kamika gives Vishnu his own day within them.

In its story, as Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, the praise of this Ekadashi rests less on a single hero and more on simple acts of devotion that anyone can offer. Above all it speaks of tulsi. It describes the worth of seeing the tulsi plant on this day, touching it, watering it, tending it and offering its leaves to Vishnu. It holds that a single tulsi leaf given with love is dearer to Vishnu than costly gifts of pearls and gems, and that the plant itself brings a quiet blessing to the home where it grows.

Lamps are the other mark of Kamika Ekadashi. Many families light a lamp of ghee or sesame oil before Vishnu and keep it burning through the evening, and some set small lamps around the tulsi plant in the courtyard. It is believed that a lamp lit on this day is especially pleasing to Vishnu, and the soft light in a wet monsoon evening gives the day a gentle beauty of its own. Vishnu is often worshipped here in his Shridhara form.

A light meal is taken on Dashami evening. On Ekadashi grains and rice are set aside; people keep a phalahar of fruit and milk, or nirjala by choice, and the evening is spent in bhajan.
