About Vat Savitri Vrat

The story at the heart of the day is short and much loved. Savitri, a princess, chose Satyavan as her husband even after she was told he had only a year to live. On the day his life was to end, she went with him into the forest, and when Yama came to take him, she followed. Her steadiness, her wise answers and her refusal to turn back moved Yama to grant her wishes one by one, until he gave Satyavan his life again. Women keep the vrat as a prayer for the long life of their husbands and the happiness of the household.

The vrat is kept on Jyeshtha Amavasya in the purnimanta calendar followed across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Punjab. In Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and parts of Karnataka, the same vrat is kept fifteen days later on Jyeshtha Purnima, where it is called Vat Purnima. The story and the worship are the same; only the day differs.

The banyan is chosen because it lives for centuries and keeps sending down new roots, and it is believed to be the home of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. On the day, women dress in a bright saree or their wedding clothes, wear sindoor and bangles, and gather at a banyan tree with a puja thali. They offer water, roli, flowers, soaked black gram, fruit and sweets, then walk around the trunk winding raw cotton thread, often seven times or more. The katha of Savitri and Satyavan is read or told aloud, usually by an elder woman, and everyone listens together. Many women fast through the day and eat only after the puja.

In some families the vrat begins two days earlier, on Trayodashi, and runs for three days, while others keep it for the single day. The day itself is fixed by the Amavasya tithi as it falls in your city, so it helps to follow the date shown above along with the custom of your own home.
