About Nirjala Ekadashi

Nirjala Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of Jyeshtha Shukla, in the hottest part of the year. Nirjala means without water, and this is what makes it unlike every other Ekadashi: those who keep it in full take neither food nor water from sunrise on Ekadashi until sunrise on Dwadashi. It is widely seen as the most demanding Ekadashi of the year and, for that reason, one of the most respected.

It is also called Bhimseni or Pandava Ekadashi because of a story about Bhima, the strongest of the five Pandava brothers. His brothers and Draupadi kept every Ekadashi, but Bhima, with his great appetite, found he could not go hungry twice a month. He asked a sage for a way to share in the good of these fasts. The sage told him to keep just one, the Ekadashi of Jyeshtha Shukla, entirely without food or water. Bhima did so, and the story says this single fast brought him the merit of all the Ekadashis of the year.

Because it falls in the summer heat, Nirjala Ekadashi is also a day of giving water. Families set out clay pots of cool water, offer sweet sherbet to passers by, and give earthen pitchers, hand fans, umbrellas and seasonal fruit such as mangoes. Water stalls appear along streets in many towns, and a day of personal restraint becomes a day of care for others.

The fast begins after a light meal on Dashami evening. Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi, flowers and a lamp, and many stay awake at night singing bhajans. Families decide for themselves how strictly to keep it. People who are unwell, pregnant, elderly or on regular medication usually keep a lighter fast, with water, fruit or milk, as their family custom allows, and this is a familiar and accepted way to observe the day.

The fast is broken the next morning on Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara is over, within the parana time shown on this page. Many begin with a little water and something light before a full meal.
