About Apara Ekadashi

Apara Ekadashi is the Ekadashi of Jyeshtha Krishna in the purnimanta calendar of North India; in the amanta calendar it falls in Vaishakha Krishna. It is also known as Achala Ekadashi, the steady one. On this day Vishnu is worshipped as Trivikrama, the form in which Vamana grew vast and measured the earth and the sky in his strides. In some northern regions the same day is also kept as Bhadrakali Jayanti, honouring an auspicious form of the Goddess.

The story, as Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, is about a righteous king named Mahidhwaj. His younger brother Vajradhwaj resented him, and one night took the king’s life and buried him beneath a peepal tree. Because his end came so suddenly, the king’s spirit could not rest and lingered near the tree. Years later a sage named Dhaumya, passing that way, sensed the restless spirit. Out of compassion he kept the fast of Apara Ekadashi himself and gave its merit to the king. The story says Mahidhwaj then found peace and went on to the higher worlds.

What sets Apara Ekadashi apart is this idea of a fast kept on behalf of another, even someone the keeper never knew, and the belief that its good travels far beyond the person who keeps it. Many people quietly remember family members who have passed on as they keep this day, and some offer its merit to them.

The fast follows the familiar pattern. A light meal is eaten on Dashami evening. On Ekadashi grains and rice are not taken; people keep a phalahar of fruit and milk, or a waterless fast by choice. Trivikrama is worshipped with tulsi, flowers, sandal paste and a lamp, and the evening is given to bhajan and the chanting of Vishnu’s names.
