About Indira Ekadashi

Indira Ekadashi is the Ekadashi of Ashwin Krishna in the purnimanta calendar; in the amanta calendar it falls in Bhadrapada Krishna. Either way, it comes during Pitru Paksha, the fortnight when families remember their ancestors with offerings of food, water and prayer. This gives Indira Ekadashi a character of its own: it joins the Vishnu fast with the remembrance of parents, grandparents and others who have passed on.

Its story, as Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, is about King Indrasena of Mahishmati, a gentle and devoted ruler. One day the sage Narada came to his court and told him that he had met the king’s late father in the other world, where he had not yet found rest. The father had sent a message asking his son to keep the Ekadashi of Ashwin Krishna on his behalf. Narada explained how the fast was to be kept. Indrasena observed it with his family and household and offered its merit to his father, and the story says his father found peace and rose to the higher worlds.

For this reason many families keep Indira Ekadashi with their own ancestors in mind. Some offer tarpan of water and sesame, give food to a priest, a cow or someone in need, and say a quiet prayer for those they have lost. It is a tender, reflective day rather than a festive one, a time to be grateful for the people whose lives made our own possible.

The fast follows the familiar pattern. A light meal is taken on Dashami evening. On Ekadashi grains and rice are set aside; people keep a phalahar of fruit and milk, or nirjala by choice. Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi, flowers and a lamp, often as Shaligrama, and the evening is spent in bhajan.
