About Papankusha Ekadashi

Papankusha Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of Ashwin Shukla, usually the day after Vijaya Dashami. The festive season is in full swing, the rains have ended and the air is turning clear. The name joins two words: papa, wrongdoing, and ankusha, the goad a mahout uses to guide an elephant. The day is understood as a gentle check on the mind, a pause to steer it away from careless habits and back toward what is good.

Vishnu is worshipped on this day as Padmanabha, the one from whose navel rises the lotus that holds Brahma, the creator. The story, as Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, praises worship of this form with flowers, tulsi, incense and lamps, and holds that remembering Vishnu with a calm heart on this day carries great merit. A story is also told of a hunter named Krodhana, who had lived a harsh life in the Vindhya mountains. Near the end of his days he went to the sage Angiras and asked how he could set things right. The sage told him of this Ekadashi, and the story says that by keeping it he found peace.

Giving lies close to the heart of Papankusha Ekadashi. The story speaks warmly of gifts made on this day: food, grain, sesame, cloth, umbrellas, footwear and, for those who can, land or cows. Many families give to temples, to the poor or to the people who work for them, and it is a natural moment to share some of the festive season’s plenty.

The fast follows the familiar pattern. A light meal is taken on Dashami evening. On Ekadashi grains and rice are set aside; people keep a phalahar of fruit and milk, or nirjala by choice. Padmanabha is worshipped with lotus or other flowers, tulsi and a lamp, and the evening is spent in bhajan.
