About Pausha Putrada Ekadashi

Pausha Putrada Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of the bright half of Paush. There are two Putrada Ekadashis in the year, this one in winter and another in Shravan during the monsoon, and both carry the same hope: the name means 'giver of a child'. Couples who are waiting for a child often keep it together, and parents sometimes keep it as a prayer for the children they already have.

The story, as Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, is about King Suketuman of Bhadravati and his queen Shaibya. They had a kingdom and every comfort but no child, and the king worried about who would carry on the family and remember the ancestors. Sad at heart, he rode alone into the forest and came to a lake where a group of sages had gathered. When he told them his story, they spoke of Putrada Ekadashi, which fell that very day. He kept the fast with them and returned home, and the story says a son was born to the royal couple in time.

In some years this is also the Ekadashi that South Indian temples observe as Vaikuntha Ekadashi, when the northern gate of Vishnu temples is opened before dawn. Whether that falls here or a month earlier depends on how the solar month lines up that year, and the temple calendar settles it.

The fast is kept the usual way: a light meal on Dashami evening, no grains or rice on Ekadashi, fruit and milk or a nirjala fast by choice, and Vishnu puja with tulsi, often in the form of Bal Gopal, the child Krishna. The night is spent in bhajan. The fast is broken the next morning on Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara, within the parana time shown above.
