About Rama Ekadashi

Rama Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of the waning moon in Kartik, by the purnimanta reckoning used in North India, about four days before Diwali. Rama here is not the prince of Ayodhya but a name of Lakshmi, so the day is kept for Vishnu together with his consort. For many families it is the first quiet step into the festival season: the house is being cleaned, lamps are being readied, and this fast comes before the bustle of Dhanteras and Diwali.

The story, as Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, is about Chandrabhaga, daughter of King Muchukunda, and her husband Shobhan. In Muchukunda's kingdom everyone kept the Ekadashi fast. Shobhan was frail and the fast was hard for him, yet he kept it, and the story says he left his body that night. He was given a shining city on Mount Mandarachala, but it was not lasting. Chandrabhaga, who had kept Ekadashi since childhood, offered the merit of her own fasts, the city became steady, and the two were together again. The story is remembered for its picture of a faithful partnership and of a practice shared between two people.

The fast follows the usual Ekadashi pattern. On Dashami evening a light meal is taken before sunset. On Ekadashi there are no grains or rice; fruit, milk and water are taken, or the day is kept nirjala, without water, by those who choose it. Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi leaves, and many place Lakshmi beside him with a lamp and white or yellow flowers. The evening is often spent in bhajan, and some keep a night vigil.

The fast is broken the next morning, on Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara (the first quarter of Dwadashi) has passed, within the parana time shown above. A simple meal, often shared with someone else first, closes the day.
