Why the muhurat differs from city to city

Lakshmi Puja is done in pradosh kaal, the evening stretch of about two hours and twenty-four minutes that starts at sunset. Within it, the preferred part is while Vrishabha, a fixed (sthir) sign, is rising in the east. A fixed sign is chosen as a wish that what is welcomed into the home stays. The muhurat in the table is where the two overlap.

Both depend on where you are. The sun sets earlier in the east and later in the west: on 8 November it sets at 4:55 PM in Kolkata and at 6:02 PM in Mumbai, 67 minutes apart. Vrishabha rises later in the west too, so the whole window slides with it. That is why the earliest muhurat on this list, in Itanagar, starts at 4:52 PM and the latest, in Rajkot, at 6:31 PM.

Amavasya is one moment for the whole country, not a local time. This year it begins at 11:29 AM on 8 November and ends at 12:32 PM on 9 November, IST. Lakshmi Puja belongs to the evening on which Amavasya is running at sunset, Sunday 8 November 2026. The date is the same for every city on this list.

A town 25 km to the east or west of a listed city moves by about a minute, so the nearest city on the list is a close guide.

Common questions

What time is Lakshmi Puja in Delhi on Diwali 2026?
It is on Sunday 8 November 2026, from 5:54 PM to 7:50 PM IST. That is the part of pradosh kaal (5:31 PM to 8:08 PM) in which Vrishabha lagna is rising.
Why is the muhurat different in Mumbai and Kolkata?
The muhurat starts after sunset and follows the rising of Vrishabha, and both come later the further west you are. On 8 November the sun sets at 4:55 PM in Kolkata and at 6:02 PM in Mumbai, so the muhurat is 5:20 PM to 7:19 PM in Kolkata and 6:27 PM to 8:27 PM in Mumbai.
When does Amavasya begin and end for Diwali 2026?
Amavasya begins at 11:29 AM on 8 November and ends at 12:32 PM on 9 November, IST. It is one moment for the whole country. Lakshmi Puja is on the evening of 8 November because Amavasya is running at sunset that day.
What if I cannot do the puja inside the muhurat?
If the window does not suit your evening, pradosh kaal as a whole is still the time the puja belongs to. Light the lamps, keep the puja simple, and do it with a settled mind.

Coming up after Diwali (Lakshmi Puja)

About Diwali (Lakshmi Puja)

Diwali falls on Kartik Amavasya, the new moon night that ends the dark half of Kartik in the purnimanta calendar. It sits in the middle of a five-day festival that begins with Dhanteras and ends with Bhai Dooj. Across north India the night is remembered as the return of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana to Ayodhya after fourteen years in exile, when the people lit rows of lamps to welcome them home. That is the meaning of the word itself: deepavali, a row of lamps.

The main act of the night is Lakshmi Puja. Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and grace, is worshipped together with Ganesha, who is remembered first in every beginning. The puja is done in the pradosh muhurat after sunset, and many families choose the part of it when the steady Vrishabha lagna is rising, since a fixed lagna is believed to help what is welcomed into the home to stay. A clean place is prepared, a kalash and lamp are set out, and the family offers flowers, rice, sweets, kheel and batashe. After the puja lamps are placed at the door, on the windows and along the walls.

Each region adds its own colour. In Bengal, Assam and Odisha the same night is Kali Puja, with Mother Kali worshipped late at night. In Gujarat and among trading families in many places, new account books are opened in Chopda Puja, marked with a swastika and the words shubh and labh. Jains remember Mahavira's nirvana on this day and Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas. Homes everywhere are cleaned, lit, decorated with rangoli and filled with sweets shared among neighbours.

Lakshmi Puja is set by the Amavasya tithi that is present at pradosh. When Amavasya touches pradosh on two evenings, or on neither in full, the choice follows the panchang the family uses, which is why calendars sometimes differ by a day.
