About Tulsi Vivah

In the story told in many homes, Vrinda was a wife known for her deep devotion and faithfulness. She is said to have taken the form of the tulsi plant, and Vishnu promised that she would be wed to him every year in his form as Shaligram, the sacred black stone. Tulsi grows in the courtyards and balconies of countless Hindu homes and is believed to be dear to Vishnu, so the wedding is a loving way of honouring a plant the family tends all year.

The day comes just after Devuthani, or Prabodhini, Ekadashi, when Vishnu is believed to wake from his four months of rest. Many families keep Tulsi Vivah on Kartik Shukla Dwadashi, while others hold it on the Ekadashi itself or on any evening up to Kartik Purnima. It is widely kept across north and west India, and in Gujarat and Maharashtra many temples hold large public ceremonies.

The tulsi pot is painted and dressed like a bride, with a red chunari, bangles, a bindi and flowers. A small mandap is raised over it with stalks of sugarcane. A Shaligram or a small idol of Krishna is placed beside her as the groom, and the steps of a Hindu wedding follow: the tying of the knot, pheras around the plant, mangal songs and the offering of sweets, amla and seasonal produce such as sugarcane, water chestnut and sweet potato. In many homes the family performs kanyadaan for tulsi as they would for a daughter.

Because Vishnu is said to awaken at this time, the close of chaturmas and Tulsi Vivah are seen as the point from which weddings and other family ceremonies begin again. Families follow their own tradition about which day to keep. The date shown above marks Kartik Shukla Dwadashi for your place.
