About Kartik Purnima

Through the month of Kartik many families light a lamp every evening, by the tulsi, at the doorway or at a temple. Kartik Purnima is the last day of that month of lamps and is among the most loved bathing days of the year. Before sunrise people take a dip in the Ganga at Varanasi, Haridwar and Prayagraj, in the lake at Pushkar in Rajasthan, where the Pushkar fair reaches its peak, and in rivers and ponds across the country.

The day carries several stories. It is kept as Tripuri Purnima, the day Shiva is said to have defeated the demon Tripurasura and brought down his three flying cities, which is why Shiva is also called Tripurari. Lamps are lit in Shiva temples in his honour. In Varanasi the same evening becomes Dev Deepawali, when the ghats are lit with lakhs of lamps for the gods, who are believed to come down to bathe in the Ganga.

For Sikhs, the full moon of Kartik is often the day of Guru Nanak Jayanti, the Gurpurab marking the birth of Guru Nanak Dev, celebrated with prabhat pheris, kirtan and langar in gurdwaras. In Odisha, families float small boats made of banana bark with lamps on water in memory of the sea traders of old, a custom called Boita Bandana.

The day is kept with a bath at dawn, worship of Vishnu and Shiva, deepdaan, which means floating lamps on water or lighting them at temples and under the tulsi, and giving food and warm clothes to those in need. Many keep a fast or eat one simple meal. The bath belongs to the Purnima present at sunrise, while the evening lamps follow the Purnima at dusk, so in some years the two fall on different dates. The timings above show this for your place.
