How to observe

  1. Light diyas at dusk at home, by the tulsi and at the doorway.
  2. If you are in Varanasi, light lamps on the ghat steps or float them on the Ganga.
  3. Join or watch the Ganga aarti in the evening.
  4. Offer prayers to Shiva and to Mother Ganga.

About Dev Deepawali

Dev Deepawali, often called Dev Diwali, is celebrated in Varanasi on the evening of Kartik Purnima, fifteen days after Diwali. As dusk falls, lakhs of diyas are lit along the steps of the city's ghats, from Assi at one end to Raj Ghat at the other, and the whole curve of the river glows with light.

It is believed that on this night the gods come down to Kashi to bathe in the Ganga and celebrate. The day is linked with Shiva's victory over the demon Tripurasura, and Dev Deepawali is seen as the gods' own festival of lights, held in joy at that victory. Kashi, Shiva's own city, is thought of as the place where they gather for it.

The evening centres on the Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat and other ghats, performed by rows of priests with large brass lamps, conch shells and chanting. Local committees, residents and visitors light diyas on every step, float lamps on the river, and many watch from boats on the water. Temples, houses and lanes of the old city are lit as well, and the bathing and lamps of Kartik Purnima make the whole day festive.

Because Dev Deepawali is kept at dusk, in the pradosh time, it follows the Purnima present in the evening. In some years the Purnima covers the evening of one day and the sunrise of the next, so Dev Diwali comes a day before the Kartik Purnima bath. Outside Varanasi, families light lamps at home, by the tulsi and at nearby temples or riverbanks on the same evening. The date and the pradosh time shown above are worked out for your place.
