About Dev Uthani Ekadashi

Dev Uthani Ekadashi, also called Devutthana or Prabodhini Ekadashi, falls on the eleventh day of the bright half of Kartik. Four months earlier, on Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha, Vishnu is said to have gone into his yogic sleep on the cosmic ocean. Those four months are Chaturmas, a time when many people keep extra vows and families usually hold back weddings, house-warmings and other big ceremonies. Today he is woken, and the year turns towards celebration again.

That is what makes this Ekadashi feel so different. In village courtyards and city flats alike, a small square is drawn near the puja place, and Vishnu's feet are traced inside it with rice paste or chalk. A little canopy is made from sugarcane stalks, and the first produce of the season, such as water chestnut, sweet potato, jujube and new jaggery, is placed beneath it. In the evening the women of the house strike a plate or ring a bell and sing the waking song, calling 'Utho Dev, baitho Dev': rise, Lord, and take your seat.

Tulsi Vivah, the wedding of the tulsi plant to Vishnu as Shaligram, is held on this day, on Dwadashi, or on any day up to Kartik Purnima, depending on family custom. After it the wedding season begins in earnest, and many families fix their first wedding dates of the season from this point.

The fast itself is kept the usual way. A light meal on Dashami evening, then no grains or rice on Ekadashi, with fruit and milk, or a nirjala fast for those who choose it. Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi, lamps are lit through the house, and the night is often spent in bhajan. The fast is broken the next morning on Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara has passed, in the parana time shown above.
