Dhanteras is the first day of Diwali, an evening for Lakshmi and Kubera, for Dhanvantari, and for a single lamp set facing south at the door.
Dhanteras muhurat6:02 PM to 7:58 PM
The overlap of pradosh kaal (5:32 PM to 8:09 PM) with the steady Vrishabha lagna, while Trayodashi lasts. Trayodashi runs from 10:31 AM on 6 Nov to 10:49 AM on 7 Nov.
On Dhanteras, Lakshmi and Kubera are worshipped in pradosh kaal, the evening stretch of about two hours and twenty-four minutes that starts at sunset. Within it, the preferred part is while Vrishabha, a fixed (sthir) sign, is rising in the east, as a wish that what is welcomed into the home stays. The muhurat in the table is where the two overlap.
Both depend on where you are. The sun sets earlier in the east and later in the west: on 6 November it sets at 4:56 PM in Kolkata and at 6:02 PM in Mumbai, 66 minutes apart. Vrishabha rises later in the west too, so the whole window slides with it. That is why the earliest muhurat on this list, in Itanagar, starts at 5:00 PM and the latest, in Rajkot, at 6:39 PM.
Trayodashi is one moment for the whole country, not a local time. This year it begins at 10:31 AM on 6 November and ends at 10:49 AM on 7 November, IST. Dhanteras puja belongs to the evening on which Trayodashi is running at sunset, Friday 6 November 2026. The date is the same for every city on this list.
A town 25 km to the east or west of a listed city moves by about a minute, so the nearest city on the list is a close guide.
Common questions
What time is Dhanteras puja in Delhi in 2026?
It is on Friday 6 November 2026, from 6:02 PM to 7:58 PM IST. That is the part of pradosh kaal (5:32 PM to 8:09 PM) in which Vrishabha lagna is rising.
Why is the muhurat different in Mumbai and Kolkata?
The muhurat starts after sunset and follows the rising of Vrishabha, and both come later the further west you are. On 6 November the sun sets at 4:56 PM in Kolkata and at 6:02 PM in Mumbai, so the muhurat is 5:28 PM to 7:26 PM in Kolkata and 6:35 PM to 8:34 PM in Mumbai.
When does Trayodashi begin and end for Dhanteras 2026?
Trayodashi begins at 10:31 AM on 6 November and ends at 10:49 AM on 7 November, IST. It is one moment for the whole country. Dhanteras puja is on the evening of 6 November because Trayodashi is running at sunset that day.
What if I cannot do the puja inside the muhurat?
If the window does not suit your evening, pradosh kaal as a whole is still the time the puja belongs to. Light the lamps, keep the puja simple, and do it with a settled mind.
Dhanteras, or Dhanatrayodashi, falls on the Trayodashi of the dark half of Kartik in the purnimanta calendar, usually two days before Diwali. Dhan means wealth and teras is the thirteenth day. Across most of India it is counted as the first of the five days of Diwali, and homes are cleaned, lit and decorated from this evening onward.
The day is also Dhanvantari Jayanti. Dhanvantari, the god of healing and the patron of Ayurveda, is said to have risen from the churning of the ocean holding a pot of amrit. Vaidyas and Ayurvedic practitioners honour him on this day. For many families the day is as much a thanksgiving for health as for prosperity.
The main puja is done in the evening, in the pradosh muhurat after sunset. Lakshmi and Kubera, the keeper of wealth, are worshipped together, often with Ganesha, using a lamp, flowers, rice, sweets and coins or a small silver piece kept on the puja plate. In Maharashtra a sweet of coarse coriander seed and jaggery is offered, and in many homes small footprints of Lakshmi are drawn in rice flour or rangoli leading into the house.
Many families mark Dhanteras by bringing home a new vessel, a utensil or a little silver or other metal. It is a tradition handed down in households and markets, not a requirement, and many simply clean and polish what they already own and place it on the puja plate.
After dark comes Yama deepdaan. A lamp of flour or clay, often with four wicks, is lit and placed outside the main door facing south, the direction linked with Yama. It is kept as a prayer for the wellbeing of the whole family. The date is chosen by the Trayodashi tithi present at pradosh, so Dhanteras can fall on the same day as Choti Diwali in some years.
