About Vijaya Ekadashi

Vijaya Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of the waning moon in Phalgun by the purnimanta reckoning (Magh in the amanta calendar), as the year moves towards spring and Holi. Its name means 'victory', and of all the Ekadashis it is the one most closely tied to an effort still ahead: an exam, a new job, a long journey, a difficult conversation, or any work that feels larger than oneself.

The story, as Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, goes back to Rama on the shore of the ocean, with his army gathered and Lanka somewhere beyond the water. Seeing no clear way across, he listened as Lakshmana pointed him to the hermitage of the sage Vakadalbhya nearby. The sage advised Rama to keep the Ekadashi of the dark half of Phalgun: to set up a kalash of water with an image of Vishnu upon it, worship through the day and stay awake through the night. Rama did so with his companions, and the story says the way forward opened after that.

Many families follow the same pattern. A kalash is filled with water, set on a small bed of grains, crowned with mango leaves, and an image of Vishnu is placed on or beside it. The fast is offered with a simple intention for the task ahead, held lightly, as a way of steadying the mind rather than bargaining for a result.

The fast is kept the usual way: a light meal on Dashami evening, no grains or rice to eat on Ekadashi, fruit and milk or a nirjala fast by choice, Vishnu puja with tulsi, and bhajan into the night. It is broken the next morning on Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara, in the parana time shown above.
