About Jaya Ekadashi

Jaya Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of the bright half of Magh, a few days after Vasant Panchami, when the mustard fields are in flower and the cold begins to ease. Its name means 'victory', understood here as the quiet victory of setting a mistake right.

The story, as Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, is set in Indra's court, where the Gandharvas sang and danced for the gods. During one performance the singer Malyavan and the dancer Pushpavati were so taken with each other that they lost the rhythm and the tune. Indra, displeased, sent them down from heaven to live as restless spirits on the cold slopes of the Himalaya. There they had no shelter and little to eat. On Jaya Ekadashi, without planning it, they ate nothing but a few fruits, and the cold kept them awake all night, thinking of Vishnu. The story says that this unplanned fast and vigil gave them back their true form, and they returned to heaven.

What stays with people from this story is its kindness. Malyavan and Pushpavati do not earn their way back through some grand effort; a single sincere day is enough. For that reason Jaya Ekadashi is often kept by people who feel they have drifted from their practice and want an easy, honest way back in.

The fast follows the usual way: a light meal on Dashami evening, no grains or rice on Ekadashi, fruit and milk or a nirjala fast by choice, Vishnu puja with tulsi and yellow flowers, and bhajan or kirtan at night. It is broken the next morning on Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara, in the parana time shown above.
