About Amavasya

Amavasya is the thirtieth tithi of the lunar month, the night the moon is not seen at all. It ends the waning fortnight, and in the amanta calendar used across south and west India it also ends the month. It is a quiet, inward day: a time to slow down, remember the family that came before, and give something back.

The central practice of Amavasya is remembering ancestors. Families offer tarpan, water with sesame seeds and kusha grass, in the names of those who have passed, and give food to Brahmins, to people in need, and to cows, crows and dogs. Many light a lamp under a peepal tree in the evening, and those who fast take fruit or one simple meal. The rites for ancestors are usually done on the day Amavasya holds through the afternoon, and the snan-daan, the holy dip and giving, on the day it holds at sunrise.

Some Amavasyas carry names of their own. Somvati Amavasya, when it falls on a Monday, is loved for holy dips and prayers for the family, and married women walk around the peepal tree. Shani Amavasya falls on a Saturday and is a day for Shani puja and giving oil and black sesame. Mauni Amavasya in Magha is kept in silence, with a dip at the sangam for many. Mahalaya Amavasya closes Pitru Paksha, the fortnight of the ancestors, and opens the way to Navratri.

Amavasya is also a festive night. Diwali's Lakshmi Puja is done on Kartik Amavasya, when homes are lit with lamps to welcome Lakshmi into the darkest night of the month. There is nothing to fear in Amavasya: it is simply the moon at rest before it begins to grow again.

Each row in the list below shows the date, the moment Amavasya begins and ends, and the key time for that day in your city.

How it is observed

  1. Bathe in the morning, in a river if you can or with a little Ganga water at home.
  2. Offer tarpan of water, sesame and kusha grass in remembrance of your ancestors.
  3. Give food, grain or clothes, and feed cows, crows or dogs.
  4. Light a lamp under a peepal tree or at home in the evening.
  5. Keep the day simple, with a light meal or a fast as your health allows.
