Pradosh Vrat falls on Trayodashi, the thirteenth tithi, twice a month, and is kept for Shiva with a puja in the evening twilight. Every Pradosh of the year is listed below with its tithi times and puja window.
Times for New Delhi (IST).
Pradosh Vrat is kept on Trayodashi, the thirteenth tithi of both the waxing and the waning fortnight, so it comes around twice a month. It is a fast for Shiva and Parvati, and devotees hold that the time after sunset on this day is when Shiva is most pleased, dancing in joy on Kailash while the gods gather to praise him.
The word pradosh refers to that evening window, pradosh kaal, which most panchangs count from sunset into the twilight after it, though some traditions begin it a little before sunset. This is why the day is chosen by the evening and not by sunrise: the vrat is kept on the day Trayodashi is present during pradosh kaal. Sometimes Trayodashi begins in the afternoon, and the vrat then falls on that same day even though Dwadashi held the morning.
Each Pradosh takes its name from the weekday it falls on. Soma Pradosh on a Monday is especially loved, since Monday is already Shiva's day. Bhauma Pradosh on a Tuesday, Shani Pradosh on a Saturday, and Ravi, Budha, Guru and Shukra Pradosh on the other days each carry a small tradition of their own, and some people begin a series of Pradosh fasts on a chosen weekday and keep it for a set number of times.
Many keep a fast through the day with fruit and milk, and bathe again before sunset. The puja is done in pradosh kaal: the Shiva lingam is bathed with water, milk and curd, bel leaves, white flowers and a lamp are offered, the Pradosh katha is read, and Om Namah Shivaya is chanted. The fast is usually broken after the evening puja.
Each row in the list below shows the date of the Pradosh, which also tells you its weekday name, the moment Trayodashi begins and ends, and the pradosh kaal window for the puja in your city.
