Purnima is the fifteenth tithi of the waxing fortnight, the day the moon is full. It ends the bright half of the month, and in the purnimanta calendar used across much of north India it also ends the month itself. Many people keep it as a day of fasting, prayer and giving, and the full moon has long been linked with calm and clarity of mind.
Purnima is often observed on two different days for two different purposes. The Purnima vrat is commonly kept on the day the full moon tithi runs through the evening, so that the moon can be worshipped at moonrise while Purnima holds. The holy dip and giving, snan-daan, is done on the day Purnima holds at sunrise. Often both fall on the same date; when the tithi spans two days, the evening of the first suits the vrat and the sunrise of the next suits the snan-daan.
The day usually begins with a bath, in a river where people can reach one and at home otherwise, followed by giving food, grain or clothes to those in need. Those keeping the vrat take fruit and milk through the day, offer water to the moon in the evening, and break the fast once the moon is seen. The Satyanarayan katha is read in many homes, with panchamrit, fruit and sheera shared as prasad.
Many Purnimas also carry festivals of their own. Guru Purnima in Ashadha honours teachers. Raksha Bandhan falls on Shravan Purnima. Sharad Purnima in Ashwin is held to bring the brightest moon of the year, when kheer is left out in the moonlight. Kartik Purnima is a day of lamps and holy dips, and Holika Dahan is lit on Phalguna Purnima.
Each row in the list below shows the date, the moment the full moon tithi begins and ends, and the key time for that Purnima in your city.
