Masik Durgashtami is the monthly day of Durga, on the eighth tithi of the waxing moon, kept with a fast and puja. Every Masik Durgashtami of the year is listed below with its tithi times.
Times for New Delhi (IST).
Masik Durgashtami, also called Masik Durga Ashtami, falls every month on Shukla Ashtami, the eighth tithi of the waxing fortnight. It is a day given to Durga, the mother who protects, and devotees keep it with a fast and puja, asking for strength, courage and a steady mind for the month ahead.
The vrat is usually kept on the day Ashtami holds at sunrise, and the puja is done while the tithi is in force. When Ashtami begins late in a day or runs across two days, the list gives the day it is kept along with the exact start and end of the tithi, so you can plan the puja within it.
The Durgashtami of Ashwin is the great one, Maha Ashtami of Sharad Navratri, when Durga Puja reaches its height and kanya pujan is done in many homes. The Ashtami of Chaitra Navratri is also widely kept with kanya pujan. The other Durgashtamis are quieter monthly days, and many devotees keep all twelve as a single vow through the year.
The day begins with a bath and a resolve. Durga is offered red flowers, a red chunari, sindoor, kumkum, fruit and a lamp, and many people read verses in her praise or chant her names. Some fast through the day on fruit and milk, others take one simple meal without grains. In some homes, young girls are honoured as forms of the goddess and given food and small gifts. The fast is usually ended in the evening after the puja.
Each row in the list below shows the date, the moment Ashtami begins and ends, and the key puja time for your city.
