Vinayaka Chaturthi, also called Vinayaki Chaturthi, falls on Shukla Chaturthi, the fourth tithi of the waxing fortnight, every month. Where Sankashti in the waning half is a day of release from difficulty, Vinayaka Chaturthi is a day of beginnings: devotees ask Ganesha for wisdom, a clear mind and a smooth start to whatever lies ahead.
Ganesha is believed to have been born at midday, and so this Chaturthi is chosen by the middle of the day, madhyahna. The vrat is kept on the day Shukla Chaturthi is present during the madhyahna window, the part of the day around noon, and the puja is done within it. The timing of madhyahna shifts with sunrise and sunset, so the window shown is worked out for your city.
The Vinayaka Chaturthi of Bhadrapada is the great one, Ganesh Chaturthi, when Ganesha is welcomed into homes and pandals across India and the festival runs for up to ten days. The other eleven, or twelve in a year with an Adhik month, are quieter, and many households keep them as a steady monthly practice that leads up to the big festival.
The day is kept with a fast or a single simple meal. At midday Ganesha is offered durva grass, red flowers, sindoor, modak or laddoos and a lamp, his names are chanted, and the katha is read. Many people make it a day to begin something new, or to finish a pending task, with Ganesha remembered first.
Each row in the list below shows the date, the moment Chaturthi begins and ends, and the madhyahna puja window for your city.
