Masik Shivratri falls every month on Krishna Chaturdashi, the fourteenth tithi of the waning fortnight, the night before the new moon. Shivratri means the night of Shiva, and devotees keep it as a monthly night of prayer, stillness and devotion, a smaller form of the great Maha Shivratri that comes once a year.
Because it is a night vrat, the day is chosen by midnight. The vrat is kept on the date whose night has Chaturdashi present during nishita kaal, the short window around midnight that is held most sacred for Shiva, and the main puja is done within it. Nishita moves with the length of the night, so the window shown is worked out for your city.
Two of the twelve stand apart. The Shivratri of Phalguna, counted as Magha in the amanta calendar, is Maha Shivratri, the year's great night of Shiva, kept with a full night of worship in temples and homes. The Shivratri of Shravan, Sawan Shivratri, falls in the month most dear to Shiva, when devotees carry Ganga water to offer on the lingam. The others are quieter, and many people keep them as a steady monthly vow.
Many keep a fast through the day with fruit and milk, and some stay awake through the night in prayer. The Shiva lingam is bathed with water, milk, curd, honey and ghee, bel leaves, datura and white flowers are offered, and Om Namah Shivaya is chanted. Some divide the night into four parts, the four prahars, and do a short puja in each. The fast is broken the next morning after bathing and prayer.
Each row in the list below shows the date, the moment Chaturdashi begins and ends, and the nishita kaal puja window for your city.
